Traditionally, Galloway extends from "the Brigend of Dumfries" to "the Braes of Glenapp". But Galloway is much more than simply a region of Scotland with a distinct history. This is a comprehensive history of the region.
I am currently reading this book and I can thoroughly recommend it, the book is really VERY readable. If you live in the US, you will find that, even with the postage, buying it via the UK could save you quite a bit, as the US price is currently just under $50.

House That Sugar Built

This book is a mixture of fact and fiction and tells the story of Margaret McGuffiie and the house in Wigtown where she lived. At that time, in the 19th Century, the house on Station Road was called Barbados, today it is known as Dunure, as it has been for about 100 years. Margaret McGuffie was black, the daughter of a Wigtown merchant who made his money in the Carribbean through the sugar trade, hence the title. She had practically disappeared from the memory of the town, until author Donna Brewster became curious about the history of the house she lived in and began researching. Over a period of ten years she pieced together much of the history of Margaret McGuffie and her family, and then wrote her story as it could have happened. The book is fiction, but at the back the author lists, by chapter, the events from it that were actually known to have happened on the basis of documented evidence. If you are interested in Wigtown in the 19th Century, you may find this book of interest. I have not read this book, only leafed through it, but my wife has just finished it as I write this, and she enjoyed it, so you may too!
